The Lab In the Attic

Listen to my words, Grasshopper….

Pick up a stone. Imagine that it represents the object of which you yearn for most in the world. Hold it tightly clutched in your fist and extend your arm out, as if you were reaching for something valuable, with the palm of your hand facing downward.

Now relax your grip. Open your hand. You see that you will loose what you are clinging to. That is why you hold tightly on to it.

But is there another possibility? Can you let go of something you want and yet keep hold of it?

Pick up your stone. With your arm outstretched again, turn your hand over so that it faces the sky. Release your grip and this time the stone still rests on your open palm. You can let go. And the stone is still yours, your hand open, and all of life around it.

Let us now think of what frequently happens in life. So often it is only when people suddenly feel they are losing someone that they realize how much they want them. They cling on even tighter. But the more they grasp, the more the other person pulls away, dropping towards the ground like the stone, to escape, and the more fragile the relationship becomes.

Do not wait until your hand opens and the stone falls away. Find the way to hold on but do not grasp.
